YouTube affiliate marketing
This is the route that works on day one. No subscriber threshold, no watch-hour requirement, no application, no review - a link in a description and something genuinely worth recommending is the entire setup.
Why it fits YouTube better than any other platform
Because people arrive at YouTube already deciding. The searches are "best", "review", "how to", "versus", "is it worth it" - every one of them a person partway through a purchase, looking for someone to settle it.
Compare that with a social feed, where the viewer was scrolling and you have to manufacture the intent before you can act on it. On YouTube the intent arrives with the viewer. That is why conversion rates here embarrass most other channels, and why a comparatively small channel can earn meaningfully.
The formats that convert, in order
- Comparison. Two named options, an honest verdict. The viewer is explicitly asking to be told which one, and answering that clearly is the highest-value thing you can do.
- Tutorial using the thing. Demonstration is proof. Watching a tool do the job removes the doubt that a written description cannot.
- Problem-first. Someone searching the problem rather than the product has not chosen yet, which is the most valuable moment to reach them.
- Honest review. Including what it does not do. Counterintuitively this converts better than uncritical praise, because the reader has already decided nobody is neutral and is looking for someone credible.
What makes the difference between earning and not
Recommending things you would recommend anyway. This is not a moral point, it is a mechanical one: an audience notices the first time you push something you clearly do not believe in, and the cost of that is the entire future value of the channel against a single commission.
The channels that earn most from this are the ones a viewer trusts to say "not this one". That reputation is the asset, and every recommendation either builds or spends it.
Where to put the link so it gets clicked
First line of the description, above the fold, before the reader has to press "more". Most viewers never expand a description, so a link placed below that cut is effectively invisible however good the video was.
Say in the video that it is down there, once, at the moment it is relevant rather than at the end. A viewer who has just watched you demonstrate something is at peak intent; the same viewer ninety seconds later has moved on.
Pinned comments work as a second placement and cost nothing. What does not work is a wall of twenty links, because a viewer facing twenty choices makes none.
Disclosure, briefly and without drama
Say that links are affiliate links, in the description and verbally where it matters. It is required in most jurisdictions, YouTube provides a paid-promotion setting for it, and it does not reduce conversion in any way that shows up in the numbers.
Audiences already assume commercial motive; stating it plainly reads as confidence and removes the one thing a sceptical viewer could hold against you.
Where it fits alongside the rest
It is the earliest-paying route and it stays significant at every size, which makes it the one worth setting up first. Ad revenue arrives later and adds to it; sponsorship arrives later still.
Channels that add the recommendation only after crossing the monetisation threshold have typically spent a year publishing videos that could have been earning throughout. The link costs nothing to add.
