How to make money on YouTube
There are seven routes, only one of them is the ad revenue everybody thinks of first, and it is neither the largest nor the earliest to pay. Knowing that before you start changes what you build.
The common mental model is that a channel earns nothing until it is monetised and then earns from ads. Both halves are wrong, and believing them is why people quit at the point where the other six routes were about to become available.
The seven routes, and when each one starts paying
| Route | Needs | Can pay from | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad revenue | Partner Programme entry | After the threshold | Modest per view, scales with volume |
| Affiliate commission | Nothing at all | Video one | High, and unrelated to subscriber count |
| Your own product | Something to sell | Video one | Highest, you keep the whole margin |
| Sponsorship | An audience a brand wants | A few thousand engaged subscribers | High per deal |
| Memberships | Partner Programme entry | After the threshold | Steady, small, reliable |
| Services | A skill people will pay for | Video one | Limited by your hours |
| Licensing clips | Footage others want | Occasional | Unpredictable |
The two facts that reorder everything
Three routes need no threshold at all. Affiliate commission, your own product and services can pay on your first video to your first hundred viewers. They are gated by having something worth recommending, not by subscriber count.
Ad revenue is usually the smallest line on a channel that earns well. Channels doing this seriously tend to earn several times more from the other six combined, which is why chasing the monetisation threshold as the goal is the wrong target. It is a milestone, not the finish.
The order that works
- Pick a subject you can make a hundred videos about. Not one you can make ten about. The hundred-video test kills most ideas immediately and saves months.
- Add a recommendation from the start. Something genuinely useful and relevant, in the description, from video one. This is the route that pays before any threshold and almost nobody sets it up early.
- Publish until the algorithm can see you. Enough videos for the system to work out who to show them to, which is a volume problem before it is a quality problem.
- Cross the monetisation threshold as a by-product, not as the objective. It arrives on its own if steps one to three are happening.
- Add sponsorship and your own product last, when there is an audience whose trust makes both possible.
What actually decides whether a channel earns
Whether the videos answer questions people are already typing. That is the whole mechanism, and it is the difference between YouTube and every feed-based platform.
A video answering a real search keeps being found for years. A video that is merely good, on a subject nobody looks for, gets its impressions in week one and is finished. The first will out-earn the second by an enormous margin over any timeframe that matters, and the effort to make them is identical.
Why YouTube compounds and social feeds do not
YouTube is a search engine with a feed attached. Instagram and TikTok are feeds with search attached, and the distinction decides what your back catalogue is worth.
On a feed platform, work published last year contributes nothing today. On YouTube it can still be the thing bringing people in, which means a channel is an asset that accumulates rather than a treadmill that resets. That is the single strongest argument for choosing it, and it is also why it feels slower at the start - you are building stock, not catching flow.
The realistic timeline
Months before anything meaningful, and the first months look like nothing is working because the catalogue is too small for the system to place you. That stretch is not failure, it is the cost of entry, and it is where almost everyone stops.
What shortens it is narrowness. A channel about one specific thing gets understood faster than a channel about a broad subject, because the system needs to know who to show you to before it can show you to anyone.
