How YouTube Shorts pay

Shorts earn from a shared advertising pool rather than from ads attached to your individual video, which is why the per-view figure is so much lower than long-form and why comparing the two directly misleads people.

The mechanism, simply

Advertising revenue from the Shorts feed is pooled, a share is allocated according to views across all monetising creators, and music licensing costs come out of it. Your earnings are a slice of a pool rather than the proceeds of ads on your specific video.

The practical consequence: Shorts revenue per view is a fraction of long-form revenue per view, and no amount of optimisation changes that. It is structural, not a reflection of your channel.

Shorts as a route into the Partner Programme

They are a genuine one. 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days is an alternative to the watch-hours path, and for some channels it arrives far sooner. Confirm the current thresholds on YouTube's own page before planning around them.

Worth understanding what that qualification gets you though: entry to the programme, which then makes long-form ad revenue, memberships and the rest available. Qualifying via Shorts and continuing to publish only Shorts leaves you in the lowest-revenue format on the platform.

What Shorts are actually good at

  1. Reach. The Shorts feed shows content to people who have never heard of you, at a scale long-form rarely matches early on.
  2. Testing. You learn which subjects land in days rather than months, which is genuinely valuable when choosing what to build.
  3. Feeding the catalogue. A Short that travels can send a meaningful number of people to a long-form video that earns properly.

Read that list again and notice none of the three is revenue. Shorts are a distribution instrument. Judged as an income source they disappoint; judged as the thing that fills the top of the funnel they are the most efficient tool the platform offers.

Why a Short that travels does not build a channel by itself

Shorts viewers arrive with almost no intent. They were scrolling, your video appeared, they watched, they scrolled on. Very few of them go looking for who made it.

So a Short with enormous view counts frequently produces a handful of subscribers and almost no revenue, which is genuinely confusing the first time it happens. The number looks like success and behaves like nothing.

What converts that reach into something is a reason to go further - an answer that obviously continues elsewhere, referenced clearly. Without it the reach is spent at the moment it is earned.

The strategy that uses both

Shorts for discovery, long-form for depth and revenue, with a clear path between them. A viewer finds a Short, follows it to a longer video that answers the question properly, and that longer video carries the recommendation that actually earns.

Channels running only one of the two are leaving something significant unused - either the reach or the revenue. Running both is more work, but they are the same subject and often the same research.
