Running a channel without appearing on it

Not being on camera removes the most common reason people never start, and it costs less than you would expect - some of the largest channels on the platform have never shown a face.

Nine formats that work

  1. Screen recording. Software, tools, tutorials, anything demonstrated on a computer. The screen is the star and it is more useful than a face would be.
  2. Hands only. Cooking, crafts, repairs, unboxing. Enormously popular and technically simple.
  3. Narrated documentary. Your voice over footage, images and graphics, telling something properly researched.
  4. Animation and motion graphics. Higher effort per video and it distinguishes a channel immediately.
  5. Whiteboard and diagram explainers. Ideal for anything conceptual.
  6. Data and comparison. Charts, rankings, side-by-sides. Cheap to make and disproportionately watched.
  7. Ambient and long-form. A different business with different economics, but a real one.
  8. Text-and-footage commentary, where the writing carries it.
  9. Voice over gameplay or process footage. The oldest format on the platform and still effective.

What you still have to supply

A voice, in both senses. Something recognisable - a way of explaining, a point of view, a standard of research - so a viewer can tell your channel from the twenty others covering the same subject.

This is where the format goes wrong. Faceless is easy to make anonymous, and anonymous is easy to make interchangeable. A synthetic voice reading facts anyone could look up is the most common version of this and it fails on both counts: viewers do not return, and the Partner Programme review may not accept it as original.

How to sound like someone rather than a narrator

Take a position. A faceless channel that only states facts is indistinguishable from every other channel stating the same facts, and the algorithm has no reason to prefer it over any of them.

Saying which of two options you would choose, and why, gives a viewer a reason to come back to your channel specifically. It also gives you something to be right or wrong about, which is what makes a channel worth following.

The second lever is structure. Answering the question in the first fifteen seconds and then explaining, rather than building to a reveal, matches how people actually watch and keeps them there.

The practical starting point

Screen recording or narrated explainer, on a subject you already know something about. Both need equipment you already own, both suit search-driven topics that keep being found, and both let the quality of the explanation be the thing that distinguishes you.

Start there, publish enough that the system can place you, and add production value once you know which topics actually get watched. Building the polish before knowing that is the usual way a month disappears.
