Starting a channel that is built to earn

Most of what people spend the first month on - the name, the logo, the camera, the intro animation - has close to no effect on whether the channel works. Here is what actually decides it, in order.

The decisions that matter

  1. The subject, tested against a hundred videos. Can you list a hundred specific video titles in it? If not, the subject is too narrow or you do not know it well enough yet. This one test prevents most channel deaths.
  2. Whether people search it. Type your topics into YouTube and see whether the suggestions fill in. If nothing autocompletes, nobody is looking, and the video will not be found however good it is.
  3. Whether anything commercial exists in it. Products, tools, services, courses. A subject with nothing to recommend limits you to ad revenue, which needs far more traffic.
  4. The format you can sustain weekly. Be honest rather than ambitious. A format you can do every week for a year beats a better one you abandon in February.
  5. The specific person you are talking to. Not a demographic - one person with one problem. It settles tone, length and topic choice all at once.

The first ten videos

Make them answers to specific questions in your subject. Not an introduction to yourself, not channel trailers - answers, with titles that match what someone would actually type.

They will not be very good, and that is expected and fine. The tenth is meaningfully better than the first, and the only way to reach the tenth is to publish the first nine. Nobody is watching the early ones anyway, which makes them the cheapest possible place to learn.

What to attach from the very beginning

A recommendation in the description, if there is something genuinely worth recommending. It costs nothing, needs no threshold, and it means the channel is capable of earning while it is still small.

Add it later and every video published before then earned nothing from the traffic it did get. The link is the cheapest thing on this page and the most commonly postponed.

The two habits that separate channels that last

Publishing on a schedule you set in advance, so the decision is made once rather than renegotiated every week. Almost every channel that stops, stops because the decision was live each time.

Reading the analytics for one thing only: which topics were found. Not subscribers, not watch time, not the graph shape. Which topics brought people in, so the next ten videos can be more of those.

Those two habits, held for six months, outperform any amount of production upgrading. Better lighting on a video nobody searches for changes nothing.

When to judge it

Not before thirty videos or six months, whichever comes later. Before that the catalogue is too small for the platform to know who to show it to, so the numbers are noise rather than signal.

People who quit at video eight almost always quit during the phase where nothing was supposed to be happening yet.
